A Time of Refreshing

The apostles gathered together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while:”

The servants the Lord had called to be his apostles were involved in great ministering. They came to Jesus excited about serving. The Lord then gave them perhaps the greatest words of wisdom concerning service – sometimes you need to just get away to a quiet place and be refreshed.

My wife and I would like to invite front-line servants of God–pastors, assistant pastors, evangelists, missionaries, Christian school teachers, etc.–to a time of refreshing on beautiful Mackinac Island. The Grand Hotel has been one of the premiere hotels on the Island since the 1880’s. It’s there where we will take time to relax and receive some spiritual encouragement for our ministries and marriages. We have invited Dr. and Mrs. John Wilkerson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, to be our guest speakers.

Please consider bringing your spouse for these few days of renewal and revival. It will be a memorable time on Mackinac Island with friends and fellow-servants. So mark off your calendar for “A Time of Refreshing.”

GETTING THERE

TRANSPORTATION

Mackinac Island is accessible only by ferry. Ferry travel with the Star Line is included in the cost of the retreat. You can get to the Island as early as you wish, but with the Conference Island Registration & Refreshments at 6:00pm on Wednesday, please plan your ferry departure time carefully.

ON THE ISLAND

Mackinac Island banned cars in 1898, so once you get to the Island you can navigate by walking, bike rental or horse-and-carriage taxis (taxi-rates non-inclusive). It’s about a 15 minute walk to the Grand Hotel from the dock through the quaint downtown area, but because of the elevation incline leading up to the hotel, some people like to wait for the the carriage taxi which is $6. Don’t worry about your bags – the Star Line will deliver your luggage to your room at the Grand Hotel.

ACCOMMODATION
Some enjoy coming a day early or staying a day later than conference times. We have special rates negotiated with a local hotel in Mackinaw City. Contact us if you need help.

THE ITINERARY

WEDNESDAY, 9/27

Arrive any time during the day on Wednesday. (Or add $50 per person to join us at noon for the Grand Hotel Buffet Luncheon. See the Tuesday bonus night details at the end of this itinerary.)

Enjoy the sites of beautiful Mackinac Island before checking into the Grand Hotel (technically after 4:00 although sometimes the rooms are ready earlier.) Mackinac Island has a gorgeous downtown area, a rich history, breathtaking scenery and picturesque hiking. In the early 1900’s, a town ordinance prohibited motor vehicles from ruining the beauty of their island. No cars have been permitted on the Island since the Village Council banned “horseless carriages” on July 6, 1898, but the Island is only an hour’s walk from one shore to the other. You could enjoy a carriage tour of the island and enjoy listening to a narration by your driver about the rich history of the island. It’s about a 20-minute walk from downtown to the Grand Hotel or you can take a carriage taxi ride.

5:30-7:00pm | Registration & Refreshments

During registration, light refreshments will be provided by the Grand Hotel. If you would like more of a meal you may want to get something on the way up to the hotel. Registration will be a great time to get reacquainted with old friends and fellowship with new ones.

7:00pm | Preaching Service

As servants to others, we spend an incredible amount of time giving to others. Just like an automobile, if you never take time to fill the gas tank or oil reservoir or coolant, you’ll stall, burn out and need major repairs. These times of spiritual rejuvenation are specifically tailored for God’s Ministers as encouragement and maintenance to keep you on the road.

THURSDAY, 9/28

7:30-9:30am | Full Hot Breakfast in the Main Dining Room

At the Grand Hotel, breakfast includes a wide selection of entrees, including omelets and made-to-order eggs, hot and cold cereals, pancakes and French toast with real Michigan maple syrup, hot oatmeal, breakfast meat such as steak, bacon, sausage, or salmon, fresh breads and pastries, fresh juices, fruits and more. A buffet is also available. (depending on Covid restrictions.)

9:30am | Ladies’ Meeting with Mrs. Terri Green and Mrs. Linda Wilkerson

A time of fellowship and learning with two of Christianity’s finest help-meets. Both of these ladies have been exemplary mainstays in their husbands’ ministries and lives. Their selfless ministering to God’s ministers have enabled their husbands to lead a more excellent service to God and God’s people.

9:30am | Casual Men’s Fellowship with Dr. Jim Green and Dr. John Wilkerson

Open questions in a group setting. Get the opportunity to relax with Dr. Wilkerson and the other men and ask questions and learn as they share their experiences on how to live a life of continuous ministry without burning out.

Leisure afternoon

4:45-5:30pm | Photo Opportunity on the Front Porch

5:30pm | Preaching Service

7:15pm | Three-Course Formal Supper hosted at the Grand Pavilion Banquet Hall.

The Grand Hotel’s Main Dining Room dinner menu is renowned for its range and excellence, with three menus rotating throughout the season. The three-course meal can include a variety of tastes to suit virtually every discerning palate. This is a formal dinner in a private banquet hall. Please bring your best formal attire for this evening’s meal.

FRIDAY, 9/29

7:30-9:30am | Full Hot Breakfast in the Main Dining Room

An entire day of touring on the Island. View the Starline Ferry Schedule.

BONUS NIGHT: Tuesday Night, September 26

For those traveling from a far distance, it is suggested that you arrive in Mackinaw City on Tuesday so your Wednesday is a leisure boat ride over to the island. We have made arrangements to offer a beautiful courtside room at the Bridge Vista Beach Hotel for $79 (plus tax.) You will reserve your own room with them at their website www.mackinaw-city.com/hotels/bridgevistabeach/

Or you can choose to upgrade to a jacuzzi room or a lakefront room. Check prices and choices under the internet special in reservations.

Please call the hotel to make your reservation instead of using the internet so it is listed under Servants Retreat for you to have the free breakfast. The hotel is not serving breakfast to everyone. Also, you will be saving the 6% sales tax. There is a 5% tourist tax.

We have visited nearly every motel in Mackinaw City and this is by far the best for the price. We will also have a 7:00 prayer meeting together in the convention center meeting room. We will also be able to enjoy a stroll on the shore and a bonfire at dark.

After catching a morning ferry, we will meet for the Grand Hotel Buffet Lunch at noon. The price for this meal is $75 on the Grand Hotel website, but we have secured a group price of $50 per person. Ask anyone who came last year:  the buffet is the most incredible lunch buffet anywhere with a salad bar, a fruit bar, a seafood bar, a bread bar, a full meat and vegetable bar, and a dessert bar. The lunch is optional, but you won’t want to miss it!
